WITHIN US – Opening Night

Apr 20 2018

A VIVID VIEW OF WHAT WE HAVE WITHIN US

In a new exhibition, independent Melbourne artist Steve Leadbeater explores the human condition by exposing our physical, emotional and spiritual vulnerabilities.

‘I want my work to connect with people in a way they feel first and describe later. I am used to getting a strong emotional response to my work. It can be confronting, like looking in the mirror with transparent skin and your heart on fire.’

The wild energy of these paintings and drawings is supported by an underlying calmness. References to spiritual aspects of indigenous cultures are visible and signify an acceptance of a natural order. ‘I believe there is more to being human than what we can see. I’m fascinated by how the so called “primitive” cultures represent spirituality. It feels so much more natural than modern religions.’

This body of work is challenging and layered. It’s a primal and affecting reminder of what we all have WITHIN US.
